Slate: Go Ahead, Sleep With Your Dog
How To Be Your Dog's Best Friend, the dog obedience manual by the Monks of New Skete, advises letting the dog sleep on the floor in your bedroom, but never in your bed. A dog trying to get too intimate should receive 'slapped paws and a shove off'—not wholly surprising advice from celibate trainers.
I have a pitbull who sleeps curled up under the covers at my feet. I also have a mutt who sleeps with his head on the pillow next to mine. They get banished to a blanket on the floor only when I have an overnight guest, which is not as often as I'd like, but more often than the pooches would prefer. The way I see it, they couldn't possibly rule my life anymore than they already do, with or without bed privilages.
And since this cold spell hit L.A. and my place has woefully inadequate heating, the little monsters and I are keeping each other warm, and everybody's happy. Monk, Schmonk!
